Getting It Write: Student Handbooks

An independent school’s student/family handbooks serve many functions. They provide key logistical information, set out social and academic expectations, articulate the school’s history and culture, and more. Schools should carefully consider what to include.
For example, is the handbook consistent with current best practices and legal requirements in areas such as acceptable use of technology, artificial intelligence, and interpersonal misconduct? Does it address mission critical topics such as re-enrollment policies, students who are 18 or older, expectations for parent conduct, and custody-related issues?
In a discussion led by SHPC Managing Partner Sarah Fay and Partner Phillipa Lilienthal, participants will explore these issues in order to prepare a comprehensive and well-structured student/family handbook.
