Getting It Write: Student Handbooks

April 25, 2024 - 12:00 - 1:30 PM Eastern - SHPC Webinar

An independent school’s student handbook serves many functions, from providing key logistical information to families, to articulating the school’s history, culture, and traditions.  It is also a legal document, and schools are well advised to consider the legal implications of what they include – and do not include – in their student handbooks.

Among other things, schools should consider whether the student handbook is consistent with current best practices and legal requirements, including all applicable state-specific requirements.  For example, is your student handbook up to date with best practices related to acceptable use and interpersonal misconduct?  Does it address the common traps for unwary schools – like re-enrollment issues, students 18 and older, parental comportment, and divorce issues?  Should the policies added in the wake of COVID-19 be revised or eliminated?

This interactive and lively webinar led by SHPC attorney Gary Finley will discuss these issues and more as they explore how to prepare and update the ideal student handbook for your school.  Attendees will receive a model table of contents to use in preparing an optimal student handbook.
