Child labor laws are designed to protect the educational opportunities of youth and prohibit their employment in jobs that are detrimental to their health and safety. Both federal and state laws restrict the hours and type of work that minors may perform and impose harsh penalties for violations. Before the summer season begins, make sure you understand these laws. Jessica L. Herbster reviewed the hour restrictions by age categories, the list of prohibited activities, and the penalties that may be imposed if an employer violates these laws.
