In this interactive program, attendees will learn about the experience of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and queer students in independent schools – not only from a senior administrator and experienced counsel, but also from each other in small work groups. Attendees will receive information to help ensure they are in step with current and evolving practices in this area of student well-being; and they will learn about the legal framework governing the rights of students and responsibilities of schools, including recent court decisions and legislation, as well as recommended steps to take to make sure that LGBTQ students are afforded the same opportunities as their peers.

Questions that will be addressed include:

  • What laws protect LGBTQ rights at independent schools?
  • Must an independent school prioritize LGBTQ rights over others?
  • How can an independent school ensure that LGBTQ students have a positive educational experience?
