February 27, 2012
10:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
(Session A)
Presented By: Sara Goldsmith Schwartz, William E. Hannum III and Paul Dubois.
Formal is out, casual is in. And as many faculty and employees rise through the ranks of schools everywhere, some schools are wondering why there are so many rules in the workplace and, especially, why all the rules are written down in long policies that no one will ever read. Experienced education and employment lawyers will discuss the key policies in the ideal employee handbook for your school. Is your employee handbook up-to-snuff with best practices and legal standards? Does it comply with state-specific requirements of your state? Does it have all the bells and whistles for electronic communications, anti-hazing and anti-bullying? Does it address the common traps for unwary schools? This program is essential for any school that has either not implemented an employee handbook – or is considering doing away with the one they already have. This training identifies – and explains – the top 15 policies that every school should implement, from electronic communications and acceptable use, to anti-hazing and anti-bullying. Designed for business officers, human resource professionals, and other administrators who are responsible for employee issues, this session will include a model table of contents, practical outlines, sample policies, and checklists to use in preparing your ideal employee handbook. We will also offer practical suggestions for keeping your employee handbook updated and current.

The High Price Of Misclassification: Are You Properly Classifying Independent Contractors, Temps, Interns And Volunteers?
May 15, 2012 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Schwartz Hannum PC Webinar
Among other law enforcement agencies, the Department of Labor is actively enforcing wage and hour laws against employers that have misclassified workers as independent contractors, temps, interns or volunteers. Misclassification can lead to significant liability in unpaid wages, benefits, and employment taxes. Independent contractor agreements are under increasing scrutiny, as are long-term temporary employees (what benefits do they get?); interns (do they get paid?); and volunteers (can your employees "volunteer"?). Federal and state governmental agencies - and plaintiffs' attorneys - are increasingly interested in these issues. During this webinar, you will learn about the appropriate tests for determining the proper classification of all these types of workers.
