Schwartz Hannum PC was founded in 1995 by Sara Goldsmith Schwartz, and, as a thriving woman-owned business, has become labor and employment counsel to businesses and non-profit organizations locally, regionally and nationally.
In 1995, Sara started the Firm with a few core clients, after leaving Ropes & Gray in Boston (where she had practiced after a federal clerkship following her graduation from Harvard Law School in 1991). Since then, the Firm has grown steadily, with our attorneys and support staff now working on behalf of over 200 clients. Sara's career has been featured in The Boston Business Journal and Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, which can be found in her biography. Today, Sara is the Firm's President and Managing Partner.
In 1999, William E. Hannum III joined the Firm as its fourth attorney, after practicing labor and employment law in the New York office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP for the prior seven years. Will's career has been the subject of an article in Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, which can be found in his biography. Will became the Firm's Managing Partner in 2000.
Schwartz Hannum PC has continued to grow and services a widely diverse client base, including businesses and non-profit organizations in numerous industries. The Firm has achieved many milestones along the way, including the following:
- In 2001, Sara was recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers’ Weekly as an “Up and Coming Lawyer.”
- In 2004 and 2005, Sara and Will were both listed in Boston Magazine and in Massachusetts Lawyers Super Lawyers, as Super Lawyers and top Labor and Employment attorneys in Massachusetts.
- In 2005, the Firm became AV “Peer Review Rated” by Martindale-Hubbell.*
- In 2006, Sara Goldsmith Schwartz was recognized by Chambers USA.
- In 2006, the Firm received certification as a woman-owned business enterprise (WBE) through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ State Office of Minority and Women Business Assistance (SOMWBA), as well as the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). The Firm is the only labor and employment law firm in Massachusetts to receive such certifications.
- In 2006, Sara and Will were both listed in Boston Magazine and in Massachusetts Lawyers Super Lawyers, as Super Lawyers and top Labor and Employment attorneys in Massachusetts.
- In 2007, Sara Goldsmith Schwartz was again recognized by Chambers USA.
- In 2007, Sara and Will were both listed in Boston Magazine and in Massachusetts Lawyers Super Lawyers, as Super Lawyers and top Labor and Employment attorneys in Massachusetts.
- In 2008, Todd A. Newman became a Partner with the Firm.
- In 2008, Sara and Will were listed in Boston Magazine and Massachusetts Lawyers Super Lawyers, for the fifth year in a row, as "Massachusetts Super Lawyers."
- In 2008, for the third consecutive year, Sara was recognized by Chambers USA.
- In 2008, the Firm expanded its office space by 35%.
- In 2009, Sara and Will are listed in Boston magazine, New England Super Lawyers, and Super Lawyers, Corporate Counsel Edition as "Massachusetts Super Lawyers" for the sixth consecutive year.
- In 2009, for the fourth consecutive year, Sara was recognized by Chambers USA.
- In 2010, the Firm was listed as 16th on the list of Top 50 Woman-Owned Businesses in Massachusetts, and Sara was selected as one of the top entrepreneurs in the country by Diversity Business.
- In 2010, the Firm received formal re-certification as a woman-owned business enterprise (WBE) from the nationally-recognized Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation's largest third-party certifier. The Firm has now been certified as a WBE both by the Massachusetts Supplier Diversity Office (SDO) and WBENC. The Firm is the only labor and employment law firm in Massachusetts to receive both of these certifications.
- In 2010, the Firm was approved as a member of The National Association of Minority & Women Owned Law Firms ("NAMWOLF"). NAMWOLF is a non-profit trade association comprised of a select group of minority and women-owned law firms that exhibit excellence in the legal profession.
