Independent School Conference On Law & Policy
Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa
243 Tresser Boulevard
Stamford, Connecticut 06901
Today, the legal and regulatory landscape for independent schools grows increasingly complex — and increasingly hazardous. From the dramatic to the prosaic, independent school practitioners, administrators, and board members face new challenges in effectively protecting students, faculty and staff, and the institution’s own mission and viability.
Especially suited for teams of two or more, this conference is the indispensable annual gathering for independent school leaders and educators seeking the latest legal trends, data, and case studies. This solutions-driven, interactive workshop will give you the tools necessary to craft policy, test approaches, and learn from the experience of others.
Faculty from all across the country, including William E. Hannum III, will present on the following topic:
From Stonewall to the Gay-Straight Alliance: The Shifting Landscape for LGBTQ Students in Independent Schools
In this session, co-presented by Will Hannum and Jonathan Cassie of Sewickley Academy, attendees will learn about the experience of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and queer students in independent schools. Participants will also gain an understanding of the legal framework that governs the rights of students and responsibilities of schools to ensure an educational experience free from discrimination. The session will end with considerations of how the ongoing question in American society of same-sex marriage rights may impact family and school partnerships and best practices in this area in independent schools and in higher education.
