NAMWOLF CLE Session: Mary Tyler Moore's Dream Come True? The Emergence Of New Pay Equity Laws

September 23, 2019 - 10:35 a.m. - 11:35 a.m. - Los Angeles, CA

Sarah H. Fay presented the CLE session "Mary Tyler Moore’s Dream Come True? The Emergence Of New Pay Equity Laws" at the 2019 National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, CA. Sarah and fellow panelists, Aaron J. Longo of Bank of America, Rebecca Weir of Legal Services Corporation, and Barbara Johnson of Potter Murdock, discussed the Federal Equal Pay Act and other topics relating to pay equity laws.

Mary Tyler Moore's Dream Come True? The Emergence Of New Pay Equity Laws

The Federal Equal Pay Act and its state corollaries, which despite being on the books for over 50 years, have not helped to narrow the pay disparity gender gap. In response, a handful of state legislatures have enacted new pay equity laws and laws that restrict employers’ ability to obtain information about applicants’ prior compensation, to help stop the perpetuation of existing gender pay differences. Told through the perspective of three “contestants” (two candidates for an open position and a current employee in a similar position), attendees will learn about how to identify potential pay equity claims under the existing federal and emerging state legal standards, and will discuss proactive steps to identify legal risks and appropriate risk-mitigation strategies and solutions.
